The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Coxswain Harry Heyman, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commander of the No. 1 gun on board the Destroyer U.S.S. ROPER (DD-147), when his ship made a successful attack upon the German submarine U-85 in the waters of the Atlantic on the night of 13 – 14 April 1942. While under attack by enemy Japanese forces, Coxswain Heyman coolly and quickly spotted the shots on the target and by securing a hit in the conning tower at the waterline, aided materially in the final destruction of the German submarine. Coxswain Heyman’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
