The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain David W. Landersman, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Fire Support Officer attached to the Tenth Mechanized Brigade, Joint Task Force East on 25 February 1991. Displaying heroic leadership and superior initiative under fire. Captain Landersman led a small team to locate an Allied Artillery Battalion. Finding the Battalion pinned down in an enemy mine field, he took command and began removal of all personnel and equipment to a new position. Without regard for his own safety, Captain Landersman repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire, coolly reorganized the battalion and moved them out of the mine field. As this process was complete, the trail elements came under attack by several Iraqi tanks. Captain Landersman realizing the gravity of the situation, again exposed himself by boarding an abandoned howitzer and fired on the attackers. He personally destroyed the lead tank, disabled at least one other, and forced the enemy to withdraw. By his inspiring leadership, courage, and unwavering devotion to duty, Captain Landersman was directly responsible for saving the Battalion, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
