The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant David Sidney Tolle, United States Marine Corps Reserve, for meritorious achievement in connection with operations against the enemy while serving with a Marine Infantry battalion in Korea from 11 April to 19 October 1953. Serving as Battalion Communications Officer, First Lieutenant Tolle displayed exceptional ability, initiative and professional skill in the performance of his duties. Throughout this period, he effectively and efficiently maintained and operated the extensive wire and radio communications system found in a combat battalion. Through his constant supervision and training of communications personnel, he developed a highly efficient battalion wire and radio section which aided in the excellent maintenance of all battalion communications facilities. His professional competence and skill were reflected in the continuous and outstanding communications the battalion maintained. He frequently expressed complete disregard for his personal safety by exposing himself to enemy mortar and artillery fire in order to personally supervise particularly difficult missions assigned to his communications personnel. First Lieutenant Tolle’s devotion to duty and indomitable spirit throughout served as an inspiration to all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (First Lieutenant Tolle is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
