The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal James Lee Vroom (MCSN: 2382343), United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company C, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division. On 28 February 1969, Company C was assaulting a large enemy force occupying a defensive position on a hill in Quang Tri Province when Lance Corporal Vroom’s squad leader was seriously wounded and fell in a location dangerously exposed to the intense hostile fire. Disregarding his own safety, Lance Corporal Vroom unhesitatingly left his covered position and, as he fearlessly rushed up the fire-swept hillside to assist his injured comrade, he was painfully wounded. Ignoring his serious injuries, he resolutely continued to advance across the hazardous area until he was again struck by hostile fire and mortally wounded. Lance Corporal Vroom’s courage, sincere concern for the welfare of his comrade and selfless devotion to duty inspired all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. (The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.)
