The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Corporal Ora E. Tate, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving as Aircraft Recovery Specialist, Expeditionary Airfield Recovery Section, Detachment Bravo, Marine Wing Support Group Thirty-seven, THIRD Marine Aircraft Wing, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, on 2 February 1983. After hearing a series of explosions and observing a flaming AV-8 Harrier Jet sliding down the runway, Corporal Tate, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the dangers involved, swiftly proceeded to the site of the burning aircraft. Demonstrating immediate, decisive action and maintaining outstanding presence of mind, he quickly released the injured pilot from the cockpit of the burning wreckage while simultaneously preventing an accidental firing of the ejection seat. Upon arrival of the crash crew, Corporal Tate remained at the site providing invaluable assistance in the rescue and task of extinguishing the fires. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Corporal Tate was undoubtedly instrumental in saving the life of the injured pilot; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
