The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert W. Tines (MCSN: 2465645), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a ?Rifleman with Company B , First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 20 January 1969, a five-man team from Company B was directed to establish an ambush site in the Dai Loc District of Quang Nam Province, and as it proceeded to the designated location, the detonation of a large hostile explosive device wounded every Marine in the small unit. Ignoring his own extensive injuries and the possibility of enemy attack upon his vulnerable position, Private First Class Tines calmly moved among his companions and skillfully rendered emergency medical treatment. Manning the radio, he then provided a complete description of the situation to his company’s command operation center and requested a medical evacuation helicopter. Although his right arm was rendered completely useless, he resolutely carried his four comrades and their weapons and equipment approximately 200 meters to a suitable landing zone, and when an evacuation aircraft arrived over the area, he skillfully guided it to a safe landing nearby. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of his fellow Marines. By his courage, resolute determination and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Private First Class Tines upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
