The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harold R. Blunk (MCSN: 2358969), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Artillery Scout Observer, Company F, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the late hours of 28 May 1968, Private First Class Blunk was positioned on an elevated piece of terrain called the “Crow’s Nest” with a dozen other Marines. This position overlooked the company’s defensive position below and its retention was vital to the company’s overall security. Observing enemy movement in the valley south of the company’s position through a starlight scope. Private First Class Blunk initiated an artillery fire mission. Undaunted by the artillery fire, the enemy continued to close on the Marine position. Under cover of darkness, the enemy attacked with machine guns, rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire. In spite of the withering enemy fire, he continued to call in fire missions, adjust the fire around the perimeter, and coordinate the adjustments with the forward observer in the company command post. Throughout the hours of darkness, he and his fellow Marines repelled numerous enemy attacks on their position. Private First Class Blunk’s leadership and courage in the face of overwhelming odds rallied his fellow Marines and was decisive in their holding the “Crow’s Nest.” With ammunition running critically low, he and another Marine left their besieged perimeter on more than one occasion to collect enemy weapons and ammunition to continue their fight against the enemy. By his extraordinary heroism in the face of extreme danger, Private First Class Blunk reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
