The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George M. Toth (MCSN: 318187), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain January 7, 1944. When well entrenched enemy units temporarily halted the advance of his platoon, Sergeant Toth daringly assumed a position within point blank range of hostile emplacements and countering with hand grenades and automatic weapon fire, succeeded in destroying an enemy machine gun and its crew. Sergeant Toth’s courageous initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
