The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to First Lieutenant Frank J. McAdams, III, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving as Motor Transport Officer of the Eleventh Motor Transport Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 22 January 1969. At the An Hoa Combat Base, a Marine entered the tent of the Advisor Team, First Ranger Group, where several United States Army and Vietnamese officers were billeted, and threatened the occupants with a loaded rifle. From an adjacent billeting area, First Lieutenant McAdams heard the disturbance and rushed to the tent to investigate. Rapidly analyzing the situation, he began to stealthily move up behind the intruder, who was aiming his rifle at an American Officer. As First Lieutenant McAdams approached, the armed Marine turned around and faced him. With complete disregard for his own safety, First Lieutenant McAdams fearlessly grabbed the man and his weapon, thereby enabling the other officer to disarm him. As a result of First Lieutenant McAdams’ heroic action, none of the threatened personnel was injured or killed during this potentially dangerous situation. His courage, bold initiative and sincere concern for his fellow men were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
