The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Air Force Award) to Captain Robert P. Brunck (MCSN: 0-37796), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot, 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, X Photo Jet, FIFTH Air Force, in support of combat operations against the enemy in Korea. On 26 January 1953, Captain Brunck, flying an unarmed and relatively slow RF-80 aircraft, and escorted by twelve F-86 aircraft, was assigned pinpoint photographic targets in Sinanju and Sinuijuu and a photographic strip of the main supply route between the two cities. Over Sinanju Captain Brunck’s aircraft was subjected to extremely heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire, but he did not hesitate in flying through a hail of fire to obtain complete photographic coverage of his assigned target. Half way through the run on the main supply route, Captain Brunck’s flight was attacked by three MiG-15 aircraft. Displaying outstanding flying skill, Captain Brunck led his escort in evading the enemy, and continued his photographic mission. Over the city of Sinuiju, he was again required to fly through a sea of bursting anti-aircraft shells in order to photograph his assigned target. Displaying courage of a rare caliber, Captain Brunck did not waver in his determination to obtain complete photographic coverage. The excellent photography obtained by Captain Brunck under extremely hazardous conditions, proved to contain important intelligence information as to the capabilities of the enemy. By his outstanding personal courage, unwavering devotion to duty, and superior airmanship, Captain Brunck brought great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
