The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lance Corporal Denver N. Creasey, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving as Motor Transport Mechanic, Marine Special Operations Team 8221, Marine Special Operations Company G, Special Operations Task Force-West, Combined Joint support Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan on 31 July, 2011 in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. While supervising contractors performing maintenance on the Team’s compound, Lance Corporal Creasey smelled smoke and began to investigate. He was led to the Team living quarters where he opened the door to the Morale Welfare and Recreation room which was engulfed in flames from a fire that had been burning for at least 20 minutes. Almost immediately after opening the door, the Team living quarters filled with a dark, thick, toxic smoke which severely limited oxygen and visibility. Instead of easily exiting the burning building, Lance Corporal Creasey maneuvered through it screaming fire and banging on the doors of his sleeping teammates, who hours ago returned from a multi-day mission. Lance Corporal Creasey’s heroic actions and total disregard for his own personal safety alerted 15 of the 18 members of his Team, allowing them to escape from the burning building, which ultimately saved their lives. Lance Corporal Creasey’s bold leadership, wise judgment, and selfless dedication to duty reflected great credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
