The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Sergeant Richard A. Dorsett, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving as Ordnance Technician, Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461, Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa, at the Godoria Range, Djibouti, Africa, on 22 June 2003. During a supporting arms training exercise in support of the Global War on Terrorism, a B-52 inadvertently dropped 750-pound bombs on personnel and two CH-53 aircraft. Observing the aircraft on fire and hearing the exploding ordnance emanating from both aircraft, Sergeant Dorsett headed towards one of the burning aircraft. Identifying an injured crew chief, he helped move him away from the burning aircraft to the safety of a nearby observation position. Disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Dorsett continually traveled between the observation position and the casualty collection point, transporting water and warning nearby service members to remain clear of the ordnance impact area. During one of his moves to the collection point, Sergeant Dorsett was injured when a round impacted directly at his feet. Despite his injuries, he continued to the collection point to provide critical first aid to an injured flight surgeon, stabilizing his condition. Sergeant Dorsett’s courageous and prompt act ions in the face of great personal risk reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
