Despite being seriously injured, First Lieutenant Johnson returned fire and continued to calmly issue directions to his Marines until he fell mortally wounded. His efforts enabled the interpreter and several Afghan soldiers to regain contact with the rest of the patrol. By his example, selfless initiative, and total dedication to duty First Lieutenant Johnson reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
