The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Sergeant Robert G. Ready, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving with Marine Aviation Training Support Squadron NINE HUNDRED ONE, Marine Aviation Training Support Group NINETY, Naval Air Station Memphis, Tennessee, on 11 May 1981. At dusk near a major highway, Sergeant Ready observed an automobile leave the road and strike a utility pole. Rushing to the scene of the accident, he noted that the impact had sheared a utility pole and that part of it was lying near the vehicle with electrical wires strewn across it. Gasoline was leaking onto the road and electrical sparks were being emitted near the volatile fluid. Witnesses observed Sergeant Ready attempt, unsuccessfully, to remove the unconscious victim, obviously due to the shot he sustained from contact with her hands. Fearing an explosion and sensing that there was little time, Sergeant Ready reached further inside the vehicle, grasped the victim’s waist, pulled her from the wreckage, and administered life-saving measures until medical assistance arrived. Sergeant Ready’s bravery and prompt actions in the face of great personal danger were undoubtedly responsible for saving the woman’s life; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
