The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Chief Warrant Officer Albert L. Edwards, United States Marine Corps, for meritorious achievement while performing Counter-intelligence operations in Beirut, Lebanon, when first assigned to the TWENTY-SECOND Marine Amphibious Unit from 19 November 1983 to 19 February 1984 and, subsequently, to the Joint Task Force Lebanon from 20 February 1984 to 26 April 1984. Arriving in Beirut, Lebanon the day after the tragic bombing of U.S. Marine Corps Battalion Landing Team 1/8’s Headquarters, Chief Warrant Officer Edwards quickly immersed himself in the complex political-military environment. He screened and developed sources of information from the local populace and reported items of significance. His tireless efforts to obtain accurate information despite great personal risk on several occasions, enabled the United States contingent of the Multinational Force in Lebanon to counter numerous and repeated threats to physical security of personnel and their facilities. On one occasion, Chief Warrant Officer Edwards persevered in obtaining information despite an artillery barrage which caused three direct hits of 130-mm. shells to the building in which he was interviewing an informant. Calmly and rapidly, he evacuated his translator and the informant and his family to safety and completed the interview. Chief Warrant Officer Edwards’ contribution to the safe preservation of United States Forces in Lebanon in the midst of hostilities was significant. By his initiative, tireless efforts, courageous actions, and selfless devotion to duty, Chief Warrant Officer Edwards reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
