The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] Walter Thomas Griffith (NSN: 0-73370), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BOWFIN (SS-287), on the THIRD War Patrol of that submarine during the period 8 January 1944 to 5 February 1944, in enemy Japanese-controlled waters. Skillfully maneuvering his ship into favorable positions to strike repeatedly at enemy shipping commander Griffith launched his bold, aggressive attacks to sink Japanese vessels totaling over 12, 000 tons and inflict damage on an additional 18,200 tons of enemy shipping. Subjected to strong hostile countermeasures during the fierce actions, he avoided damage to his ship by his swift, evasive tactics and succeeded in bringing his vessel to port without injury to his gallant crew. Commander Griffith’s valor, inspiring leadership and devotion to the fulfillment of his perilous mission reflect great credit upon himself, his command and the United States Naval Service.
