Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 313 (May 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Cook [then Officer’s Cook] Marion Green, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. AARON WARD (DD-483), during an engagement with Japanese naval forces near Savo Island on the night of 12 – 13 November, 1942. After a shell had struck and badly damaged his station in the galley, Chief Cook Green lifted a wounded shipmate to his back and attempted to evacuate him when a second shell struck the galley, killing the wounded man and piercing Chief Cook Green’s body with innumerable pieces of shrapnel. Although suffering acutely, he, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, refused to leave his battle station and remained to care for another wounded comrade. Chief Cook Green’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
