The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade [then Ensign] Robert William Gabel (NSN: 0-320561), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Seaplane embarked from the Heavy Cruiser U.S.S. SAN FRANCISCO (CA-38), during amphibious operations against enemy Japanese-held islands, on 15 June 1944. Volunteering to go to the rescue of the pilot and crewman of a United States plane which had been shot down over enemy territory, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Gabel skillfully landed his seaplane on the water within fifty yards of a Japanese-held beach, maneuvered alongside the downed aircraft, picked up the survivors and returned to his ship without damage. His courage and brilliant airmanship in effecting the rescue of two men reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Gabel and the United States Naval Service.
