The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Seaman Second Class Edward E. Dobrowolski, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while attached to the U.S.S. JOHNSTON (DD-557) when that vessel was severely damaged by enemy Japanese gunfire during the Battle of Samar in the Southwest Pacific War Area on 25 October 1944. Courageous and unwavering in the performance of duty despite the extreme peril, Seaman Second Class Dobrowolski remained steadfast at his station and, although the water had risen to his chest and escaping steam made the magazine almost unbearable, continued unceasingly at his task of passing ammunition. His valiant and determined efforts in defense of the JOHNSTON and his exceptional fortitude under enemy fire reflect the highest credit upon Seaman Second Class Dobrowolski and the United States Naval Service.
