Bureau of Naval Personnel Information Bulletin No. 311 (February 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Machinist’s First Class Glyn D. Dillard, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-2), in action during the Battle of Midway, on 6 June 1942. Directing fire fighting efforts with calm courage and efficiency, Chief Machinist’s Mate First Class Dillard was largely responsible for the quick suppression of fires started by the explosion of enemy bombs. Later, as a volunteer member of the salvage party which returned aboard the listing carrier, he entered holes cut through decks into a rag stowage space, where he labored tirelessly for six hours to extinguish a fire that had been burning for two days. After the YORKTOWN had been hit by torpedoes and the U.S.S. HAMMANN had sunk alongside, he dived into the oil-covered water and supported two drowning men until they could be picked up by boat. Chief Machinist’s Mate First Class Dillard’s gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty at the risk of his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
