The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Major & Aide-de-Camp John Whedon Steele, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 29 November 1864, while serving with U.S. Volunteers, in action at Spring Hill, Tennessee. During a night attack of the enemy upon the wagon and ammunition train of this officer’s corps, Major Steele gathered up a force of stragglers and others, assumed command of it, though himself a staff officer, and attacked and dispersed the enemy’s forces, thus saving the train.
