The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant & Regimental Quartermaster John Wesley Clark, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 28 July 1863, while serving with 6th Vermont Infantry, in action at Warrenton, Virginia. First Lieutenant Clark defended the division train against a vastly superior force of the enemy; he was severely wounded, but remained in the saddle for 20 hours afterward until he had brought his train through in safety.
