The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Fire Controlman Second Class J. M. “Jay” Cross (NSN: 6713323), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving on board the U.S.S. Bush (DD-529), on 6 April 1945, during repeated strafing and suicide attacks by enemy aircraft. After his ship had been initially seriously damaged, Fire Controlman Second Class Cross remained aboard during successive crash dives rendering assistance to wounded and assisting in damage control measures. When it became necessary to abandon ship he gave his lifejacket to a wounded shipmate. While in the water he supported a seriously wounded man until he himself lacked strength to remain afloat. His courage and conduct were in keeping with the best traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
