The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert Byron See (MCSN: 0-20333), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane in Marine Fighting Squadron THREE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (VMF-321), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Mariana Islands Area from 7 to 15 September 1944. Completing his fortieth mission during this period, Captain See carried out daring combat air patrols and participated in two hazardous strikes against vital enemy installations on Rota. By his skilled airmanship, courage and loyal devotion to duty in the face of grave danger, he contributed materially to the success of his squadron and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
