The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Robert Byron See (MCSN: 0-20333), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane in Marine Fighting Squadron THREE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (VMF-321), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands and Bismarck Archipelago Areas from 25 March 1944 to 2 April 1944. Completing his twentieth mission during this period, First Lieutenant See carried out reconnaissance flights and participated in destructive strafing attacks against enemy barges and ground installations. By his skilled airmanship, courage and loyal devotion to duty in the face of grave hazards, he contributed materially to the success of his squadron and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
