The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Winfred O. Reid (MCSN: 0-12729), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Fighter Squadron TWO HUNDRED TWENTY-TWO (VMF-222), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Bismarck Archipelago Area, from 7 to 15 February 1944. Completing his fortieth mission during this period, Captain Reid furnished escort for friendly forces and carried out a hazardous combat air patrol, thereby contributing materially to the success of his squadron. By his skilled airmanship and courageous devotion to duty in the face of hostile antiaircraft fire and aerial opposition, Captain Reid upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Completing his twentieth mission during this period, First Lieutenant Reid carried out hazardous combat air patrols and pressed home a strafing attack on Japanese troops and shipping, thereby contributing materially to the success of his squadron. By his skilled airmanship and courageous devotion to duty in the face of hostile antiaircraft fire and aerial opposition, First Lieutenant Reid upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
