The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Jay A. Brown (NSN: 2830566), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Medical Corpsman attached to the 1st Marine Raider Battalion. During the hostile attack on the airport, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on the night of 13 – 14 September 1942, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Brown stationed at the battalion aid station, constantly exposed himself to hostile machine gun, rifle, and grenade fire while caring for the wounded at the aid station and evacuating the wounded to the rear, well knowing that the road which he must traverse was under fire from groups of the enemy who had infiltrated around the flank and rear of our position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
