The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign Charles R. Broderick (NSN: 0-254043), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Battery Officer, U.S.S. YORKTOWN (CV-5), in action during the Battle of Midway, on 4 – 6 June 1942. During battle on 4 June 1942, Ensign Broderick was stationed on a 11″ gun mount as Battery Officer. With all of the 20 men fully wounded and with bomb splinters in his back and legs, Ensign Broderick assisted in the removal of the dead and wounded and continued his duty until the loss of blood made it impossible for him to stand. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
