The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain [then Commander] Thomas Edward Boyce (NSN 0-57960), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of the Light Cruiser U.S.S. SANTA FE (CL-60), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Shikoku, Japan, on 19 March 1945. When his ship went alongside a burning carrier which had been damaged by enemy air attack, Captain Boyce supervised the activities of fire fighting and rescue and frequently exposed himself to flames and explosions as he went about the topside of the ship, coordinating the fire fighting, rescue of personnel, transfer and care of the wounded and the handling of lines to the carrier. Captain Boyce’s courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
