    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain [then Commander] Thomas Edward Boyce (NSN 0-57960), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of the Light Cruiser U.S.S. SANTA FE (CL-60), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Shikoku, Japan, on 19 March 1945. When his ship went alongside a burning carrier which had been damaged by enemy air attack, Captain Boyce supervised the activities of fire fighting and rescue and frequently exposed himself to flames and explosions as he went about the topside of the ship, coordinating the fire fighting, rescue of personnel, transfer and care of the wounded and the handling of lines to the carrier. Captain Boyce’s courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain [then Commander] Thomas Edward Boyce (NSN: 0-57960), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Engineer Officer of the Light Cruiser U.S.S. SANTA FE (CL-60) from 24 November 1942 to 23 August 1943, and as Executive Officer from 23 August 1943 to 9 February 1945, during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Pacific War Area. As Engineer Officer, Captain Boyce maintained his department at the peak of efficiency during continuous operations in the Aleutian Area. Subsequently carrying out his important duties as Executive Officer, he contributed materially to the excellent operation of the ship and to the high morale of the officers and crew despite difficult conditions. Coordinating the various departments of his ship, he assisted in the infliction of considerable damage on the enemy and in the successful completion of all missions without damage to the SANTA FE. His professional skill, leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Captain Boyce is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
