The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Francis Gaines Blasdel (NSN: 0-78874), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Assistant Damage Control Officer aboard the Light Cruiser U.S.S. MARBLEHEAD (CL-12), when that ship was bombed by Japanese planes during the Battle of the Java Sea on 10 February 1942. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Blasdel was in the Central Station. Although this compartment was badly wrecked he was able to maintain communication with the repair parties and remained at his post, coordinating their efforts, until smoke and rising water forced evacuation through the hollow foremast leg. He proceeded successfully to each effected area, where, under conditions of extreme hazard, he entered burning, flooded and distorted spaces to ascertain and carry out the steps required. This work was capably continued, practically without rest, until temporary repairs were completed in dock. By his courage, leadership, judgment, tenacity, coupled with utter disregard for his own safety, he contributed greatly toward the saving of the ship and the saving of many lives. His gallant actions and selfless devotion to duty, without regard for his own safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
