The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade [then Ensign] Augustus T. Allen, Jr. (NSN: 0-163298), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and distinguished service in the line of his profession as Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer, Amphibious Force, Atlantic Fleet, during the attack on the Island of Sicily, 10 to 13 July 1943. In command of a shore fire control party of the 45th Infantry Division, United States Army, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Allen landed with the initial assault waves and from fearlessly maintained position in the front lines, directed supporting gunfire upon enemy machine guns, troop concentrations, and tank attacks despite enemy small arms and artillery fire, and, by so doing, materially assisted in overcoming enemy resistance and capturing the town of Biscari and the Biscari Airfield. He directed gunfire on an enemy tank attack which threatened to encircle his battalion, scoring four direct hits and repulsing the tank attack. In order to obtain observation he advanced beyond friendly front lines on numerous occasions. The judgment, initiative, and bravery displayed by Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Allen throughout the entire battle are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
