The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major George Lindley Hollowell (MCSN: 0-10182), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Operations Officer and Flight Leader in Marine Fighting Squadron ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Marshall Islands Area, from 6 April 1944 to 1 September 1944. Leading his flight in numerous strafing, low-level dive-bombing missions during this period, Major Hollowell contributed materially to the infliction of extensive damage on the enemy and, during an attack on 24 May, braved concentrated hostile anti-aircraft fire to destroy a fuel storage dump on Emidj Island, Jaluit Atoll, with a direct bomb hit. On 17 August, he succeeded ins coring a bomb hit on a coastal defense gun position on Mille Island. Major Hollowell’s courage, airmanship and devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
