The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant George Lindley Hollowell (MCSN: 0-10182), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane in Marine Fighting Squadron TWO HUNDRED TWENTY-FOUR (VMF-224), in actions against enemy Japanese forces during the Solomon Islands Campaign, e0 August 1942 to 14 September 1942. Pressing home his attacks against hostile aircraft with courageous determination and utter disregard for his own personal safety, Second Lieutenant Hollowell shot down five Japanese planes. His superb airmanship and inspiring devotion to duty contributed to the high morale and aggressive fighting spirit of his squadron and aided greatly in establishing the security of United States Forces in the Solomon Islands.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel George Lindley Hollowell (MCSN: 0-10182), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States during the period 18 March 1965 to 14 February 1966, while serving as the Chief for Air Plans and Operations Division, Command Operations Center, Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. Colonel Hollowell’s arrival in South Vietnam coincided with the decision to increase air assistance to the Government of Vietnam. He formulated, organized, and guided the buildup in the Air Operations Branch, thereby making it more responsive to the growing United States Involvement within Southeast Asia. He was deeply involved in the delicate function of coordinating air operations with various United States Embassies and Military Authorities in Southeast Asia. He represented COMUSMACV in the planning, organizing and managing of the B-52 strike program in South Vietnam and provided constant liaison between Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, the Corps Commanders and the U.S. Embassy to insure that the program became an integral part of the successful United States assistance effort. His imagination and initiative contributed toward solving the many problems in communication and coordination, and the flexibility and responsiveness that Colonel Hollowell exercised assisted in providing an adaptable and yet sophisticated application of military force for maximum effectiveness. Colonel Hollowell’s performance of duty, professional competence and outstanding achievements were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Commander-in-Chief Pacific: Serial 31627The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major George Lindley Hollowell (MCSN: 0-10182), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Operations Officer and Flight Leader in Marine Fighting Squadron ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Marshall Islands Area, from 6 April 1944 to 1 September 1944. Leading his flight in numerous strafing, low-level dive-bombing missions during this period, Major Hollowell contributed materially to the infliction of extensive damage on the enemy and, during an attack on 24 May, braved concentrated hostile anti-aircraft fire to destroy a fuel storage dump on Emidj Island, Jaluit Atoll, with a direct bomb hit. On 17 August, he succeeded ins coring a bomb hit on a coastal defense gun position on Mille Island. Major Hollowell’s courage, airmanship and devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
