The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Jack Lambert Brushert (MCSN: 0-10577), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. Lieutenant Brushert arrived at Guadalcanal 17 November 1942, and since that time has taken part in numerous searches and attacks into enemy-held territory. On 3 December, in the late afternoon and at a distance of more than 175 miles from Guadalcanal, Lieutenant Brushert participated in an attack on enemy cruisers and destroyers scoring one of the damaging hits on a cruiser. Messages of commendation were received from the offices of COMSOPAC and Commanding General, FMAW, Cactus Base, for the manner in which this attack was conducted and its result in turning back a dangerous enemy task force. On 12 December and 15 December he participated in striking a damaging blow to land installations on Munda Point. All of these attacks were made in the face of heavy anti-aircraft fire and adverse flying conditions but were carried out with skill, courage and determination that were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.
