The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Charles Sheffield Brown (MCSN: 0-24455), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy in Korea on 27 November 1951. Captain Brown took off on a rail cut mission as second division leader of a nine plane flight. En route to the assigned target Captain Brown’s flight was diverted to a new area to investigate a report of two loaded trains proceeding south. Upon arrival in the area where the trains were reported to be, the flight leader sighted a loaded train heading south and immediately prepared for an attack. At the moment, Captain Brown located the second train some five miles distant and requested of the flight leader permission to attack this target with his division. Permission being granted, Captain Brown maneuvered his division into position and immediately began his attack. His expertly executed bombing attacks, followed by accurately placed fire from his machine cannons, despite heavily concentrated ground fire from enemy gun emplacements, caused serious damage to the locomotive and numerous rail cars, and inflicted casualties among the enemy. His leadership inspired his division to inflict further damage to the train and to enemy personnel. Captain Brown’s courageous leadership, efficient action, and fearless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
