The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Douglas A. Bangert (MCSN: 0-7132), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. On 13 November 1942, Captain Bangert piloted one of four Torpedo Planes which, twice in the same morning, attacked an enemy battleship of the KONGO Class. The battleship was escorted by six destroyers and a large group of fighter planes. In two attacks the striking force of which Captain Bangert was a member, accounted for three direct hits on the enemy battleships. These attacks aided greatly in destroying a capital ship of the enemy naval forces.
