The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Robert W. Baker (MCSN: 0-17176), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot and division leader attached to Marine Fighting Squadron THREE HUNDRED TWELVE (VMF-312), operating in the Solomon Islands area from 24 December 1943 to 28 January 1944. On numerous occasions Lieutenant Baker led his division on escort missions, fighter sweeps, and routine patrols deep into enemy territory where they encountered intense anti-aircraft fire and heavy fighter plane opposition. On 1 January while escorting bombers on a strike over Rabaul, a large number of Zeros attempted to intercept the formation. In the ensuing action, Lieutenant Baker destroyed one and severely damaged another of the enemy planes. His skillful maneuvering of the planes in his division afforded excellent protection for the bombers during the entire mission. On 24 January, while again flying as escort for a strike against Rabaul, he destroyed two more Japanese fighters which attacked the formation. His brilliant leadership and outstanding ability contributed materially to the success of all missions and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
