The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant William G. Andrews (MCSN: 0-20604), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights as an air observer of a Marine Division in action against enemy forces at Iwo Jima Island, from 19 February to 16 March 1945. Beginning on D-Day and flying in carrier-based aircraft, First Lieutenant Andrews accurately and successfully directed artillery fire, making possible the destruction of numerous enemy installations, and directly aiding the advance of our troops. In the skillful and effective completion of thirty-two combat missions over enemy territory, he flew at low altitudes in the face of heavy enemy small-arms fire and anti-aircraft fire and in constant hazard from our own supporting arms fires. Undeterred, he successfully completed all missions, thereby materially aiding the progress of the operation. His leadership, courage, and skill were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
