The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Edward P. Andrews (MCSN: 0-9932), United States Marine Corps, heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of Marine Fighting Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE (VMF-121), in action against enemy Japanese surface forces. On 14 October 1942, Second Lieutenant Andrews was one of a flight engaging in strafing an enemy surface force of six transports and six destroyers. With complete disregard for personal safety he strafed the last transport in column and then continued on and strafed each of the transports in turn. His dogged determination and skillful execution of this attack while subjected to extremely heavy anti-aircraft fire from all ships proved an incentive to all pilots of the squadron and contributed materially to the dispersing of the Japanese force. His courage throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Lieutenant Andrews was subsequently killed in an operational crash.
