The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Robert L. Anderson (MCSN: 0-7001), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights as Squadron Leader and Flight Leader of Marine Fighting Squadron ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN (VMF-111), during action against Japanese forces in the Marshall Islands from 6 April to 1 October 1944. In addition to planning combat missions, he displayed exceptional skill and airmanship in leading the squadron, or his flight, over enemy held territory on strafing, low level, and dive bombing attacks. Despite accurate anti-aircraft fire he destroyed an enemy fuel dump on Tinian Island, Jaluit Atoll on 11 May. On 12 August he scored a direct hit on a radar station located on Mille Island, Mille Atoll. He consistently pressed home attacks with great daring and ability, and contributed greatly to the neutralization of enemy held atolls. His leadership and aggressive fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
