The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant James Robson Anderson, Jr. (MCSN: 0-24133), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights in operations against the Japanese on 16 and 17 February 1945, in the Tokyo Area. As the pilot of a carrier-based fighter in the face of very undesirable weather and accurate anti-aircraft fire he made determined attacks on enemy shipping. In conjunction with another pilot he destroyed an enemy float plane. On the next day as a member of a flight of seven fighters he participated in aerial combat against superior numbers of enemy aircraft. Flying through very undesirable weather again, and in the face of almost continuous anti-aircraft fire, he skillfully attacked approximately thirty-five enemy fighters, damaging one. He completed the mission by strafing a Japanese airfield. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
