The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Julian F. Acers (MCSN: 0-6475), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot and Squadron Leader of a Marine Scout Bombing Squadron based in the Marshall Islands Area from 2 June to 2 August 1944. Major Acers participated in numerous dive-bombing attacks against Japanese-held Atolls during this period, frequently encountering intense anti-aircraft fire. He consistently pressed home his attacks in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire and his skill, determination and efficient leadership was an inspiration to the members of his command. On 6 June 1944, he scored a direct hit on an anti-aircraft battery on Mille Island. On 11 June 1944, 1 July 1944 and 8 July 1944, he scored direct hits on coastal defense guns on Jaluit Island. His courage and superb airmanship contributed materially to the success of offensive aerial operations and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
