John Estrada was born in Laventille, Trinidad and Tobago in 1955. He immigrated to the United States as a teenager and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1988. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1973. From June 27, 2003 until his retirement on April 25, 2007, he served as the 15th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.
