Charles McCawley was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1847, following in the footsteps of his father James McCawley who had been a Marine Corps Captain. He was appointed Colonel Commandant (8th Commandant) of the Marine Corps on November 1, 1876 and served in that position until forced into retirement by poor health on January 29, 1891.
