Allan Wood enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve as an aviation cadet on December 7, 1942. He was commissioned a Marine Corps Reserve second lieutenant and designated a Naval Aviator in 1945. Released from active duty in 1946, he attended and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. degree in 1950, and with an M.A. degree in 1951. He was recalled to active service, seeing combat in both Korea and then again in Vietnam. He retired as a United States Marine Corps Major General.
