Lloyd Smith attended George Washington University and graduated from Doane College, Crete, Nebraska, in 1954. He had previously served in an active reserve unit as a sergeant until he was commissioned upon graduation from Doane College. He retired as a United States Marine Corps Brigadier General in 1985.
