Leland Smith is a graduate of George Washington University, holding both B.A. and M.A. degrees from that institution. He entered service as an enlisted member of the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1934 and joined the 19th Battalion, USMCR in Augusta George. He was commissioned in the Marine Corps reserve while on active duty in 1940. he retired as a United States Marine Corps Brigadier General.
