Raymond Shaffer enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1946 after graduating from high school. He served in combat operations as an Enlisted Marine in Korea and returned home as a staff sergeant in October 1951. After promotion to technical sergeant, he was meritoriously commissioned a second lieutenant in March 1953. He retired as a United States Marine Corps Major General.
