On September 5, 1912, retired General Arthur MacArthur attended the 50-year reunion of the survivors of the 24th Wisconsin. Standing at the podium, with the same scarred battle flag he had earned the Medal of Honor carrying, and preparing to give the keynote address to his comrades, he collapsed and died. He was carried from the hall, wrapped in the same flag he had carried so valiantly at Missionary Ridge. He and his son Douglas are one of only TWO Father/Son Recipients of the Medal of Honor.
